The federal government has upgraded its SuperSeeker online tool that allows users to manage their superannuation accounts and search for any lost or forgotten super accounts.

There are about 3.4 million lost super accounts in the system totalling over $17 billion.

"SuperSeeker can help people find their lost money so they can enjoy it in their retirement," Superannuation Minister Bill Mr Shorten said in a statement on Tuesday.

The upgrade makes it easier for people to consolidate their super accounts using as online form.

Once registered to SuperSeeker, people can see the super accounts that they have contributed to in the previous two financial years, while allowing them to transfer online any super money held by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to a super fund of their choice.
