A US coroner has found Australian businessman David Coe suffered from years of heart disease that led to his death while skiing on a mountain in Aspen, Colorado.

Coe, the 58-year-old former head of collapsed company Allco Finance Group, went into cardiac arrest on Aspen Mountain on January 21.

"The cause of death was arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease and the manner of death was natural," the Pitkin County Coroner's Office said in a statement, after completing its examination.

Coe was remembered by friends as a family man and philanthropist.

He was also the face of one of Australia's biggest corporate failures when Allco, a global financial services business listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, went into voluntary administration in November 2008 with debts of about $1.1 billion.

Coe is survived by his wife Michelle and their sons Christopher, Robert and Matthew.
