It's official: Toyota is once again the world's top car seller.

Toyota on Monday said its tally for global vehicle sales in 2012 soared 22.6 per cent to 9.75 million vehicles.

Toyota has dethroned General Motors (GM), which achieved 9.29 million sales.

GM had been the top seller for more than seven decades before losing the title to Toyota in 2008.

GM retook the sales crown in 2011, when Toyota's production was hurt by the quake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

Robust Asian sales and a pick-up in North America helped drive Toyota's sales, offsetting weak demand in Europe and the effects of a consumer boycott in China.

In November, Toyota increased its profit forecast to Y780 billion ($A8.3 billion) for the fiscal year to March, up from Y760 billion.
