The Dow Jones Industrial Average was UP 166.03 points at 13,104.14 at the close of trade on New Year's Eve on Monday in New York, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index was 23.76 points HIGHER at 1,426.19.
The NASDAQ Composite index is ROSE 59.2 points to 3,019.51.
On Wednesday morning, the Australian dollar is trading at 104.01 US cents, UP from 103.83 US cents at Monday's close.
The local currency is worth 90.19 Japanese yen, 78.79 euro cents, 63.98 British pence and 1.2575 New Zealand dollars.
Benchmark crude oil was UP $US1.02 at $US91.82 per barrel.
On Monday, the SPI futures index was DOWN 30 points at 4,616.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index on Monday LOST 22.4 points to 4,648.9 and the broader All Ordinaries index LOST 20.7 points to 4,664.6.
The spot price of gold is $US1,675.40, UP from Monday's close of $US1,663.34.
