Tokyo stocks opened almost flat on Tuesday in the absence of fresh trading clues.
The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 0.07 percent or 6.01 points at 9,165.15.
Tokyo stocks are likely to struggle for direction, with attention on the dollar-yen movement, said Kenichi Hirano, operating officer at Tachibana Securities.
"In terms of fundamentals, there is little hope," he told Dow Jones Newswires, while adding sentiment on the Nikkei was "not too bad" from a technical perspective.
US stocks closed flat on Monday in quiet trade with the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipping 3.56 points to finish at 13,271.64.
The euro bought $1.2349 and 98.01 yen in early Asian trade, compared with $1.2342 and 97.97 yen in New York late on Monday.
The dollar was also flat at 79.35 yen.
