Hong Kong shares have opened 0.43 per cent lower on fears that US politicians may not be able to agree a deal to avert the fiscal cliff of tax hikes and spending cuts before the year-end deadline.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index was down 97.82 points at 22,568.77 in the first minutes of trade on Monday.
