The Dow Jones Industrial Average has FALLEN by 24.49 points to 13,114.59 in New York, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index LOST 6.83 points to 1,419.83
The NASDAQ Composite index was 22.44 points LOWER at 2,990.16.
The Australian dollar is trading at 103.76 US cents, DOWN from 104.09 US cents at the end of the local session on Christmas Eve.
The local currency is worth 88.83 Japanese yen, 78.49 euro cents, 64.33 British pence and 1.2663 New Zealand dollars.
Benchmark crude oil GAINED $US2.37 to $US90.98 per barrel.
At the close of trade on Christmas Eve on Monday on the ASX 24, the March share price index futures contract was up 21 points at 4,613 points.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index closed 11.6 points, or 0.25 per cent, higher at 4,635.2, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 10.4 points, or 0.22 per cent, at 4,645.6.
The spot price of gold is $US1,659.46, slightly UP from Monday's close of $US1,659.23.
