Former Telstra chief financial officer John Stanhope has been named chairman of the federal government-owned Australia Post.
He has been appointed to the position for four years, communications minister Stephen Conroy said.
"Mr Stanhope brings to the role extensive experience in finance, commercial strategy and communications technology," Senator Conroy said in a statement on Friday.
Mr Stanhope joined Australia Post and Telstra's predecessor, the Postmaster Generals Department, in 1967.
Since then, he has held a number of operational and senior financial management positions, including chief financial officer of Telstra.
Mr Stanhope is currently a non-executive director of AGL Energy Ltd, the Bionics Institute and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and a council member of Deakin University.
He takes over as chairman from Mark Darras, who has been acting in the position since September 2012.
