The Victorian government has appointed former Labor Party defence minister Robert Ray to head a state board.
Mr Ray, who served in the Australian Senate from 1981 to 2008, will start as chair of the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) from next week.
The authority provides insurance and risk management advice to the government and other bodies.
Victorian Finance Minister Tim Holding said Mr Ray's long involvement in Australian politics and recent experience in the private sector put him in good stead to succeed in his new role.
Mr Ray held several portfolios during the Hawke and Keating governments, including defence, immigration, local government and ethnic affairs.
He is currently chair of the Australian Political Exchange Council and a director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.
Mr Ray succeeds Adrian Nye, whose term expired at the end of last year.
