The Queensland government wants to focus high-density development along major public transport corridors in the state's crowded southeast corner.

Premier Anna Bligh has unveiled a new plan to guide urban development and protect existing communities in the region.

Under the plan, the government will work with local councils to identify areas along public transport corridors suitable for high-density development.

The two tiers of government will also identify established suburbs that will be protected from such development.

"Density around major public transport corridors means we can take the pressure of the suburban character of our cities," Ms Bligh said as she unveiled the plan in Brisbane.

She said it would also cut the amount of time it took for developments to be assessed from years to months.

The premier has written to mayors in southeast Queensland seeking their views.

The proposal will be considered at the next southeast Queensland regional planning committee meeting.

"If we locate appropriate density in these locations, we can encourage more people to swap a car trip for a bus or a train trip," Ms Bligh said.
