Former Treasury secretary Ken Henry has been appointed to the board of the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

Dr Henry will join the ASX as a non-executive director on February 1, with shareholders to vote on his appointment at the company's annual general meeting later in the year.

ASX chairman Rick Holliday-Smith said Dr Henry's reputation and experience as an economist and senior bureaucrat would strengthen the expertise of the ASX board.

Dr Henry served as the secretary of the Department of the Treasury from 2001 to 2011.

He is also a director of National Australia Bank and Chairman of the Institute of Public Policy at the Australian National University.
