David Jones has received a takeover offer from a mystery entity in the United Kingdom.
The retailer's chairman Robert Savage said on Friday he had received an unsolicited letter from a non-incorporated UK entity indicating it was interest in making an offer for David Jones.
Mr Savage said he been unable to find any public information about the entity.
The board of David Jones do not believe they currently have enough information to enable them to qualify or value the approach, the company said.
Should that change, a further announcement will be made, David Jones said.
"In the meantime the directors recommend that shareholders treat any related market comment cautiously," the company said in a statement.
